Margaret Olley Art Centre - NOW OPEN
In early November 2011, the Margaret Olley Art Trust offered the Tweed
Regional Art Gallery a contribution of $1 million towards the establishment of
the Margaret Olley Art Centre, to be housed in a purpose-built extension
to the Gallery.
To honour the wish of the late Margaret Olley, the Art Centre includes a
recreation of her studio, and elements of her home and collections. The offer
from the Trust also included a gift of works from the artist’s collection,
including finished paintings, a large number of works in progress, ephemera and
correspondence in the possession of the Margaret Olley Estate.
In late November 2011, the Federal Member for Richmond, Justine Elliot announced
the Government’s contribution of a further $1 million toward the funding for
this project. The Margaret Olley Art Centre honours the much-loved artist's
wish that her artist's studio and elements of her home be re-created in a
purpose-built extension to the Tweed Regional Art Gallery.
The Centre houses a re-creation of rooms from her home studio in Duxford
Street, Paddington, including the Hat Factory and the Yellow Room. The new wing
also includes additional exhibition space, storage and multimedia areas.
The Frances Mills Education Workshop and the Marks Family Library have also been
relocated to the new Centre and in completing the artist’s vision, the Nancy
Fairfax Artist in Residence Studio will operate as a standalone facility
adjacent to the Margaret Olley Art Centre.
Tweed Shire Council, the Tweed River Art Gallery Foundation Ltd. and the Friends
of the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre Inc. have
enthusiastically embraced this project, which provides a facility of
national cultural significance. This major capital project required
substantial financial support from these organisations, as well as assistance
from private and corporate supporters.
Gallery Open 10am - 5pm Wednesday to Sunday
